Head Splat FX

Published in HorrorFX by Lance Fischer Print PDF

So I posted to the Indy Mogul forum asking for some tips on smashing a head with a sledge hammer, but did not get a tip that I think will work well enough. I'm back to trying a few ideas on my own. Obviously I am going to have to use a fake hammer, which should be easy to make. I think the main problem is going to be the splat when the hammer hits the head. I don't know if I should show actual or implied violence. I read the merits of both methods on the Indy forum and am still deciding. My first attempts at actual violence are going to be made using a melon of some sort to practice with. I think smashing the melon in front of a green screen and taping the action would allow me to superimpose the splat over the actors head. If I can make this look good, I think the rest will be easy. If this does not work, I might have to go with the implied route and cut away just as the hammer is about to splat. Any ideas anyone has would be great.
