$20 Electric Chair

Published in Horror by Lance Fischer Print PDF

I tried to find a prop electric chair for the latest episode, but had little luck. The ones I did find were way to expensive for our budget. I figured I could make one, so I made a trip to Home Depot and bought seven 2 X 4's and a bunch of bolts. With no plans to speak of I laid out the chair on my garage floor. A few hours later I had a stable chair. The next step was to add some paint. I used some old brown paint I had around the house for the base color, then used a little black spray paint to add some character. To age it a bit, I beat the thing with a hammer and chain then used nails to create holes all over it. A saw was used to cut pieces out to add to the effect of a well used chair.

I looked online for actual electric chair photos and did a little research as to what it takes to make a chair work. Although this chair would never really work, I was able to grab a bunch of spare parts from old computers and other stuff laying around the garage to build the electric parts for the chair.

Once I added all the electrical parts, I used an airbrush to add the finishing touches. I knew it wasn't perfect, but in a dark room it would be convincing. And it only cost be around $20.00

Here are a few photos showing the build process.
